Meta has officially announced the rollout of ads on WhatsApp. With this, Meta has given companies a new way to interact with consumers on one of the most popular messaging apps in the world.  Ads will only show up in the Updates tab, which is where Status and Channels are located, during this rollout; private conversations and calls will remain unaffected.

Businesses can access this feature through Meta Ads Manager, where they can create traffic or engagement-led campaigns. Ads can take the form of single images or short videos of up to 30 seconds, built in a vertical format. Once clicked, these ads drive users straight into a WhatsApp chat with the business, opening up a direct and seamless communication channel for product discovery, support, or conversions.

To activate the placement, brands need a WhatsApp Business account or API integration connected to their Facebook Page or business portfolio. Meta has enabled targeting based on location, language, and age, while its Advantage+ audience tools help optimise campaign delivery. Brands can also choose manual placements, with WhatsApp Status requiring inclusion alongside Instagram Stories for better reach.

Importantly, Meta highlights that WhatsApp’s privacy-first foundation remains intact. Status updates disappear after 24 hours, personal messages and calls continue to be end-to-end encrypted, and the platform collects very limited user data. Ads are governed by WhatsApp’s messaging guidelines, with strict enforcement against fraud, scams, or policy violations.

By introducing ads in WhatsApp Status, Meta is expanding its advertising ecosystem while giving businesses a new discovery-led touchpoint in an environment already familiar to consumers. The move is expected to help brands boost visibility, initiate conversations, and drive measurable engagement in a safe, trusted space.
