“I dream of a Digital India where government services are easily and efficiently available to citizens on mobile devices.”

These were the words of the Honourable Prime Minister of India when he addressed the Digital India summit in 2014 through a video conference.

Since then, India has come a long way in digital communications. One of the government’s initiatives—the Aadhar identity—is supposed to be a key pillar of ‘Digital India’. And now the government has launched the mAadhar app for Android users. Users can lock and unlock their biometric data along with the convenience of having the data on their phone wherever they go. The app also provides other features such as sharing the eKYC details with service providers and viewing or sharing the updated Aadhar profile via QR codes.

The mAadhar app isn’t the first such app launched by the Modi government. We scan the Play Store for other apps launched by the government and how they fare on the store.

Swachh Bharat Mission App

The app was launched in support of a mass movement for cleanliness led by the PM himself. It was launched in the month of May this year with an aim to reach out and bring the people together on a single ideology. The app is available on the Play Store and already has over 1,00,000 downloads with a rating of 4.4 on the store.

The app sends a message about the cleanliness drive to anyone who is near a monument or a museum and encourages them to report any uncleanliness around them. It also has various other features for the app user like starting a cleanliness challenge and submitting activities. Users can also post before and after pictures of cleanliness drives being undertaken.

MyGov Mobile App

The MyGov app is an initiative that was launched to invite innovative citizen engagement and easier, proactive participation in governance by giving a platform to voice their concerns. Citizens can also freely participate in the formulation of policies and programme implementation for direct participatory democracy. The MyGov Mobile App is available on only android platforms. Currently, it has over 5,00,000 downloads with an overall rating of 4.2 on the store. The app also has an access to various blogs and news articles.

PMO India app

The PMO India app is the official app of the Prime Minister’s Office. The app is available on Android phones and serves in 10 languages by providing the latest news from the Prime Minister’s Office. Users can also have a peek into the social media updates from PMO along with listening to audio recordings and watching videos of ‘Mann Ki Baat’. The app has over 1,00,000 downloads and has a commendable rating of 4.6 on the store.

Digital Locker

The digital locker app could perhaps be one of the least performing android apps in terms of user satisfaction. With over a million downloads, it has a rating of only 3.3. The app, however, is aimed at transforming India into a digitally empowered society as well as a knowledge economy. It is targeted towards paperless governance and is aimed to be a platform for the issuance and verification of documents digitally.

mPassport Seva RTI India

The mPassport seva app has over one million downloads with a rating of 3.9 on the store. It aims to making passport related work easier, convenient and efficient. This is expected to be one of the largest projects of the Government of India under the National e-Governance plan (NeGP) being executed in a public-private partnership along with TATA Consultancy Services. The app gives an option to calculate the fees for the issuance of passport or its renewal, a status tracker and appointment availabilities. The app also provides general information along with contact options.

According to reports, the Narendra Modi led government is planning to launch UMANG (Unified Mobile App for New-age Governance), which is a single app for all the services of central government, state government and local bodies.
