At I/O 2026, Google unveiled the biggest transformation of Search in over two decades, signalling a future where search engines move beyond information retrieval into proactive AI-powered assistance.

Google has announced a sweeping AI-led overhaul of Search, introducing conversational AI capabilities, autonomous “Search agents”, multimodal interactions and generative interfaces as it attempts to redefine how users discover and interact with information online.

Unveiled at Google I/O 2026, the update marks what the company describes as the biggest redesign of the Search experience in more than 25 years. Google said its AI Mode has now crossed one billion monthly users globally, with query volumes more than doubling every quarter since launch — an indication of growing consumer comfort with AI-native search experiences.

A major part of the rollout is the integration of Gemini 3.5 Flash as the default model powering AI Mode globally. Google claims the upgraded model improves reasoning, coding and agentic capabilities, enabling Search to handle more complex and hyper-specific queries with greater contextual understanding.

The company has also redesigned the traditional Search box into a dynamic AI-first interface that expands based on the complexity of a user’s query. Beyond text, users can now search using images, files, videos and even Chrome tabs. AI-powered suggestions will additionally help users frame and refine queries in real time, moving beyond conventional autocomplete functions.

Another key announcement was the introduction of “Search agents” — autonomous AI systems capable of continuously scanning the web and proactively surfacing updates based on user preferences. These agents can track apartment listings, monitor sneaker launches, follow sports updates or scan financial developments, sending synthesised updates and actionable recommendations. The feature will initially roll out to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers.

Google is also expanding agentic booking capabilities within Search. Users will be able to search for highly specific local experiences or services — such as reserving a karaoke room or booking beauty and pet care appointments — while Google can even contact select businesses on behalf of users in the US.

The company further introduced “agentic coding” within Search through Gemini 3.5 Flash and Google Antigravity. Search will now be capable of generating custom interfaces, simulations, visualisations and mini applications in real time. For instance, users can ask Search to create personalised fitness trackers powered by live maps, weather and review data.

Additionally, Google is expanding “Personal Intelligence” across nearly 200 countries and 98 languages, allowing users to securely connect Gmail, Photos and eventually Calendar to personalise search responses.

The developments underline a broader industry shift where search engines are evolving into AI-powered assistants capable of reasoning, acting and building customised digital experiences — a transition that could fundamentally reshape online discovery, publisher traffic and digital advertising ecosystems.
