Elon Musk has once again stirred debate with his management approach, this time targeting his team at xAI. According to a leaked memo, employees were given just 48 hours to justify their roles in the company by submitting a one-page report detailing their accomplishments over the last four weeks and outlining their goals for the coming month.

The directive, sent on a Tuesday and due by noon Thursday, mirrors Musk’s hard-nosed practices at other ventures, including X (formerly Twitter). The tight timeline has created an atmosphere of unease at xAI, the company behind the Grok chatbot. Notably, there has been no official update from Musk or xAI after the deadline passed.

The move comes close on the heels of a major restructuring at xAI, which saw the layoff of over 500 employees from the data annotation team—a division critical for training Grok. At the same time, xAI has begun hiring specialised AI tutors with higher pay packages to strengthen its model training, reflecting broader trends in the AI sector where competition with OpenAI and Google remains intense.

Musk’s latest directive is seen as a step toward building a leaner and more focused workforce, though it has also raised pressing questions about employee security and the long-term direction of xAI.
