Gopichand P Hinduja, Chairman of the Hinduja Group, passed away in London on Tuesday at the age of 85, according to a media report. A second-generation member of the Hinduja family, he took over as Chairman after the passing of his elder brother Srichand in May 2023.
Earlier this year, the Sunday Times Rich List reaffirmed Gopichand and his family as Britain’s wealthiest individuals. Known as ‘GP’ among peers, he headed both Hinduja Group and Hinduja Automotive Ltd in the UK. Beginning his journey with the family business in Mumbai in 1959, Gopichand steered the organisation from its Indo-Middle East trading origins to a global enterprise spanning multiple industries.
Under his leadership, the group acquired Gulf Oil in 1984 and Ashok Leyland in 1987, marking a landmark moment for NRI investments in India. He also led the conglomerate’s diversification into power and infrastructure.
A graduate of Jai Hind College, Mumbai, Gopichand Hinduja held honorary doctorates in Law and Economics from the University of Westminster and Richmond College, London. The Hinduja Group today employs over 200,000 people globally across sectors including finance, energy, media, and automotive.
