  • Arijit Ray, CEO and Founder of The Unlock Company and former CEO of Dentsu India, celebrates his birthday today, marking a career that blends advertising strategy with spiritual mentorship.
  • Ray's advertising career includes leadership roles at major agencies such as McCann Erickson and DDB Mudra, where he transformed the latter into the largest and most awarded office within four years.
  • After leaving Dentsu India, he founded The Unlock Company, focusing on creative branding and design, with a diverse portfolio that includes work for VIP Industries and Fullerton India Credit Company.
  • In addition to his agency work, Ray is a prolific columnist on spirituality and has developed a corporate training module that applies ancient Indian philosophies to modern business practices, earning recognition in 2023 with the Top 10 Global SME CEO Excellence Award.

The advertising industry has no shortage of accomplished executives, but few careers navigate the distance between boardroom strategy and spiritual mentorship as naturally as Arijit Ray's. As the CEO and Founder of The Unlock Company and former CEO of Dentsu India, Ray turns a year older today. This occasion is a good moment to take stock of a career that has consistently defied easy categorisation.

Ray's advertising journey began at respected agencies, including McCann Erickson, Rediffusion, and Saatchi & Saatchi, before he was appointed President and Head of DDB Mudra West at age 36. He then led a notable turnaround, transforming the office into the group's largest, most profitable, and most awarded within 4 years. That momentum carried him to Dentsu India, where, as one of the youngest CEOs in the Dentsu Inc. network, he and his team grew the agency into one of the fastest-growing in the global network within a single year.

In 2014, Ray chose a different path. He stepped away from Dentsu to build something of his own, first with Paperboat Brandworks and subsequently with The Unlock Company, a creative branding and design agency built on what he describes as the intersection of creativity, strategic brand understanding, and common sense. The agency's portfolio reflects that philosophy, spanning identity work for brands including VIP Industries, Tata Mutual Fund, Eveready Industries, and a complete brand transition for Fullerton India Credit Company to SMFG India Credit Company, a Tokyo-based financial services group.

But Ray's second act has never been limited to client mandates. He is a prolific columnist whose writing spans BW Businessworld, Financial Express, Economic Times, Brand Equity, and the Times of India Speaking Tree, where he has published 19 articles on spirituality in everyday life. Some of those pieces have appeared alongside contributions from Sadhguru and the Dalai Lama.

His Unlock Your Potential module, which draws on ancient Indian philosophical frameworks and applies them to corporate life, has reached professionals across organisations including TVS Motors, Eveready Industries, Sony Entertainment Television, and Cap Gemini. In 2023, he received the Top 10 Global SME CEO Excellence Award from HR Success Talk, and has chaired panels at Business World events in both 2023 and 2025.

What makes Ray's career arc distinctive is its coherence. The strategist who helped grow Dentsu is the same person conducting meditation sessions for plant-floor managers at Remsons Industries. The common thread, across agencies, entrepreneurship, writing, and coaching, is a genuine investment in people.
