Veteran industry leader and CEO of Applause Entertainment Sameer Nair is stepping down from his role after a decade, according to sources privy to the development, signalling a leadership transition at one of India’s most prominent content studios.

Applause Entertainment is part of Aditya Birla group, led by Kumar Mangalam Birla. The group has recently forayed into Indian Premier League acquiring majority stakes in the Royal Challenges Bangalore team along with the Times of India Group and others.

It remains unclear who will take over Nair’s responsibilities or what his next move will be. Queries sent to Mr Nair did not elicit a response at the time of publishing. Applause declined to comment on the development.

Nair, a veteran of India’s television and digital content ecosystem, has played a pivotal role in building Applause Entertainment into a premium content studio, known for its adaptations of international formats and a strong slate of original series across OTT platforms.

Under his leadership, the company backed several critically acclaimed and commercially successful shows, helping position it as a key player in India’s rapidly evolving streaming landscape.

Prior to Applause Entertainment, Nair held leadership roles at major media organisations, including Star India, where he was widely credited with shaping programming strategy during a formative phase for Indian television. He played a central role in the launch of Kaun Banega Crorepati in 2000, hosted by Amitabh Bachchan.

He also worked at Balaji Telefilms and NDTV Imagine among others.

His exit comes at a time when the content ecosystem is undergoing rapid shifts, with platforms recalibrating investments, focusing on profitability, and re-evaluating content pipelines.

Industry insiders suggest that the transition could mark a strategic reset for Applause Entertainment as it navigates the next phase of growth amid increasing competition and changing viewer preferences.
