Rahul Khullar is TRAI’s new Chairman

Commerce Secretary Rahul Khullar has been appointed as the new Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) for a three-year term. “I will be joining from tomorrow,” Khullar told a newswire on May 12, 2012.

He succeeds JS Sarma, whose term ended on Sunday.

Amongst the issues of the telecom industry that has kept the TRAI occupied in the last few months, the new Chief would also have to deal with the tariff order in context to digitisation and the concerns raised thereof.

One issue in particular that is being discussed is carriage fee. Even as the Indian Broadcasting Foundation (IBF) has welcomed the order, dubbing it positive for the Indian broadcasting industry, it has voiced the problems of legitimising carriage fee and the ambiguity on the subject.

Reportedly, Khullar has been credited with trade normalisation between India and Pakistan as Commerce Secretary.
