Video: Govt should steer away from regulating free speech: Vikram Chandra
At the same time, there always are checks & balances to freedom of speech; we shouldn't have people making statements that incite any panic or religious hatred, says the CEO of NDTV Group
Regulation of social media in India has been a topic of controversy for some years now, with the Government keen on having in place some regulations, while the media industry opposes any such move.
Speaking to exchange4media, Vikram Chandra, CEO, NDTV Group affirmed, I don’t think the Government will be well-advised to step in and try and censor speech in any way, whether it is on social media, on the internet or anywhere else. That is something that is not necessary or required.”
At the same time he said, “There always are checks and balances to freedom of speech; we shouldn’t have people coming out and making statements that incite any panic or religious hatred, leading to communal riots. Those kinds of checks on free speech are always there even in real life. You can’t just stand up and say whatever you want. Obviously, there would be consequences to that.”
