Media personnel assaulted after Ram Rahim verdict

After being sentenced in the rape case, Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Ram Rahim Singh followers assaulted police and journalists and set media OB vans on fire

Soon after the news that Dera Sacha Sauda Chief Ram Rahim Singh was sentenced by the CBI court  on charges of rape was out, his supporters  broke down barricades, assaulted police and journalists and set media OB vans on fire. NDTV reported that its OB van has been vandalized near the court premises in Panchkula, allegedly by followers of Ram Rahim Singh.

 

At least 30 people died and 350 were injured during Friday’s clashes while hundreds more were injured in the town of Panchkula, where the trial took place. “Thirty people are dead and at least 250 are injured,” said a government official in Panchkula.

 

According to reports, the followers of Ram Rahim Singh were trying to get as close as possible to the courtroom where he has been kept in custody. Cameramen and journalists were beaten up by the followers and there were reports of violent clashes coming from various parts of Punjab and Haryana, soon after the verdict of Ram Rahim Singh being taken into custody by the Haryana Police. He was later taken to Rohtak jail.

 

It must be mentioned that more than one lakh followers of Ram Rahim were present in Panchkula where the verdict was delivered today. The Dera chief faces up to seven years in jail and the quantum of the sentence is set to be announced on Monday, August 28.
