Malayala Manorama TV (MMTV), the television division of Malayala Manorama, is planning to increase its presence in the television space in Kerala by adding a general entertainment channel by mid-2011. Speaking to exchange4media, Jacob Mathew, Executive Editor and Director, Malayala Manorama, said, “A GEC is in our plans. We are working to launch it by mid-2011.”
The channel is expected to help the Group gain foothold in the cluttered GEC space. The new channel would complement the Group’s 24-hour news channel, Manorama News, headquartered in Kottayam. The news channel was launched in August 2006 and has been perched at No. 1 spot consistently for some time, according to TAM media report.
When asked about the scope for another GEC in the cluttered Kerala market, Mathew asserted that a new entrant that is able to give a better package to the viewers was bound to succeed. He added, “If you look at any market, you will find that the clutter level of GECs of respective languages is very high, even for Hindi. However, if a new entrant is able to give a better package to the viewers, it is bound to succeed. Those who understand the Malayalee psyche well will be able to cater to the requirements better than competition.”
Meanwhile, following the demise of Chief Editor KM Mathew, who passed away recently, Mammen Mathew, the eldest brother in the clan, has taken over as Chief Editor. Mammen had been holding key posts in the company for the past four decades and his elevation process was only a natural one, said Jacob Mathew.
