Despite missing the medal by a whisker at the Rio Olympic Centre, gymnast Dipa Karmakar has won millions of hearts and turned out to be the most trending personality on social media platforms. She created history by becoming the first Indian gymnast to enter the Olympics finals. Her fourth position at the women’s vault final on the eve of India’s 70th Independence Day was extensively talked about throughout August 15 on Twitter and Facebook. More importantly on Star Sports 2, the sports channel of Star India where Rio Olympics 2016 was telecasted, Karmakar’s act garnered 4.1 million viewers according to Bangalore based media-tech startup, Zapr.  

She managed to perform her much-vaunted Produnova vault (also called ‘the vault of death’) cleanly to score 14.850 on the vault, 11.666 on the uneven bars, 12.866 in balance beam and 12.033 in floor exercises. And, this vault alone fetched 2.3 million users between 11.45pm and 12am.


Maximum viewership of 800,000 came from West Bengal with 600,000 from urban and rest from rural. This is followed by Maharashtra where 600,000 viewers saw her act with predominantly 500,000 viewers from urban only. Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh are the other states which brought in viewership. The chart below indicates that the gymnast’s performance found more favour from urban centres.

Zapr had earlier monitored viewership data for the Rio Olympics 2016’s opening ceremony and shared that 5.6 million Indian viewers have tuned in to watch at 4 am. Day one of the biggest sports event in the world received a grand viewership of 52.7 million viewers in India.
