BJP boycotts NDTV for posting 'manufactured' tweet
BJP's members will boycott panel discussions held by NDTV after the news channel tweeted a statement, it claimed was originally tweeted by Sushma Swaraj, which insinuated internal rife within the political party
As the Lok Sabha elections less than a month away, the drama usually associated with it is also reaching a fever pitch, and this time, it has another outlet – the social media.
On Saturday (March 8, 2014), NDTV had posted on the microblogging website Twitter – “If there is a Modi wave in India, why is he looking for a safe seat in UP, tweets senior BJP leader Sushma Swaraj.”
This post has raised the BJP’s ire, since Swaraj does not seem to have tweeted anything of that sort. NDTV has since apologised “for incorrectly attributing a tweet earlier to Sushma Swaraj”, but that does not seem to have placated the BJP (the offending tweet also seems to have been deleted). Arvind Gupta, National Head of BJP’s IT cell, later tweeted about the BJP boycotting the channel with the hashtag #ShameonNDTV. Another senior leader, Arun Jaitley, also called the “concocted tweet” as “unpardonable” and expressed his hope that NDTV would make the necessary enquiries.
The official statement on BJP’s website reads: “Kind attention, Tweet being manufactured by a channel in order to hurt BJP is unprecedented. BJP, therefore, has decided to keep away from panel discussions of NDTV for present.”
The #ShameonNDTV hashtag, meanwhile, reached nearly 320 tweets over the weekend.
