Govt journalist welfare scheme: Rs 11.21 crore disbursed in last 5 years

Government has released Rs 11.21 crore under the Journalist Welfare Scheme in the last five years till January 2022, Information & Broadcasting (I&B) minister Anurag Thakur told the Rajya Sabha. He further stated that the financial assistance has been provided in 247 cases.

The funds sanctioned by the government under this scheme has seen a steady increase with each passing year. In 2017-18, an amount of Rs 39.38 lakh was sanctioned followed by Rs 99.99 lakh in 2018-19, Rs 1.15 crore in 2019-20, Rs 2.6 crore in 2020-21, and Rs 6.06 crore in 2021-22 (till January 2022).

Thakur also stated that the government undertook a special drive for providing financial assistance to the families of journalists who succumbed to COVID-19.

On the basis of applications received by the Press Information Bureau and which fulfil the criteria laid under the Journalist Welfare Scheme (JWS), a sum of Rs 6.15 crore has been approved during the financial years 2020-21 and 2021-22 for financial assistance @ Rs 500,000/- family to the families of 123 journalists who died due to COVID-19, he added.
