Understanding the Muhurat Tax: Astrology's Role in India's Economy - Dr Sandeep Goyal

On a Tuesday morning in November, in a small showroom in Cuttack, a man will buy a Rs 19 lakh Scorpio.

He did not need a Scorpio on that very Tuesday. He needed it 3 months ago. His old car broke down. His loan was approved. But he waited. Because his mother said – "Dhanteras tak ruko."

He will wait 87 days to buy what he could buy today, because the stars were not right.

Multiply that man in Cuttack by 1.2 crore families.

That is the real Bharat economy.

We were taught in B-school that demand is rational. Supply, price, income, preference. Four factors.

In Bharat, there is a fifth factor that beats the other four combined: Muhurat.

I call it the Muhurat Tax. Not a tax the government takes. A tax time takes. A waiting tax we all willingly pay to astrology.

ASTROLOGY IS NOT SUPERSTITION. IT IS INFRASTRUCTURE.

Let's get the numbers out of the way, so the MBA types don't roll their eyes.

~ 40-45% of annual auto sales in India (Bharat included) happen in the 45-day window from Navaratri to Diwali. In October 2023, we sold 4.8 lakh cars in one month. That year in June, we sold 3.2 lakh. Same income, same interest rate. Different muhurat.

~ 30-35% of annual gold jewellery sales happen in 10 days – Dhanteras, Diwali, Akshaya Tritiya, and wedding season muhurats. Tanishq's own investor call says Q3 is always 35%+ of full year revenue. Not because of discount. Because of dates. Auspicious dates.

~ Real estate registrations in Maharashtra jump 300% on Akshaya Tritiya and Gudi Padwa. Sub-registrar offices stay open till midnight. People buy a house they have not even seen properly because the pandit said 11:42 am is shubh and the purchase must be affected.

- Even online - MakeMyTrip data: searches for "family trip" spike 22% the day after Pitra Paksha ends. For 15 days of Shradh, Hindus don't buy, don't travel. The whole economy holds its breath. Then exhales in one week.

This is not irrational. This is infrastructure. Like America has Thanksgiving and Black Friday as shopping infrastructure, Bharat has Navaratri, Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya.

Only our Black Friday was invented 2,000 years ago and needs no ad budget.

WHY MUHURAT WORKS: THREE HUMAN TRUTHS

  1. Muhurat Is Outsourced Decision Fatigue.

Indian families are joint decision machines. To buy a car, you need husband, wife, father, mother, and mother's brother who knows about cars. Getting consensus is war.

Muhurat solves it. "Panditji said Tuesday 4:30 pm" is not a suggestion, it's a court order. No one argues. The daughter-in-law who was saying "white colour is better" now says "whatever is available at muhurat". The muhurat ends debate.

Smart brands don't fight it. They print it. Maruti Suzuki sends dealers a yearly "Shubh Muhurat Calendar". Not a discount calendar. A muhurat calendar. Because discount can be negotiated, muhurat cannot.

Business takeout: If your product needs family approval, don't sell features. Sell a date. "Delivery on Akshaya Tritiya" is a more powerful CTA than "10% off".

  1. Muhurat Makes Spending Guilt-Free.

Indians feel guilty spending big. We are a saving culture. Rs 15 lakh for a car feels like sin.

But if you buy on Dhanteras, it is not spending. It is investing. It is Lakshmi coming home. Your mother will not say "Why did you waste money?" She will say "Lakshmi came early this year."

Same money, different story. One story has guilt. Other has blessings.

That is why gold on Dhanteras never feels expensive. Even at Rs 75,000 or double that per 10 grams, women stand in line at 11 pm. Because it is not gold, it is good luck. Good luck has no price.

Business takeout: Don't give Dhanteras discount. Give Dhanteras blessing. A small silver coin, a name mention in a puja, a box of sindoor. Rs 200 cost, but removes Rs 2 lakh guilt.

  1. Muhurat Creates Artificial Scarcity Without Lying.

Western marketing invented "Hurry! Sale ends Sunday!" We don't believe it anymore. We know sale will come back.

But "Akshaya Tritiya ends at 6:17 pm" – that is real. It will not come back for a year. You have to buy now. And everyone is buying now. So if you don't buy now, Sharma ji will.

That is why car showrooms look like fish markets on Dhanteras. Not because of offer. Because everyone else is buying. Social proof with a deadline set by the cosmos.

Business takeout: Stop creating your own urgency. Borrow cosmic urgency. Your "Big Billion Days" is your urgency. Dhanteras is everyone's urgency. Piggyback.

THE NORTH-SOUTH, METRO-BHARAT DIFFERENCE IN MUHURAT

Muhurat is not the same everywhere. This is where marketers get it wrong.

North India: Muhurat is loud. Dhanteras, Diwali, Navaratri – purchase muhurat. You must BUY. Show off. Loud marketing works. Banners saying "Shubh Dhanteras – Same Day Delivery" win.

South India: Muhurat is even stronger, but quieter. Akshaya Tritiya is bigger than Dhanteras. Ugadi, Pongal, Varalakshmi – buying for home prosperity. South doesn't buy car on Dhanteras as much as North does. South buys gold on Akshaya Tritiya like there is no tomorrow. Kerala buys gold on Vishu.

Metro: Muhurat is becoming "content". People will still buy online at 11 pm on Dhanteras, but they will also post story – "Our Lakshmi is home". They want delivery to align with muhurat, not necessarily purchase. So 2-hour delivery on Dhanteras beats 20% discount 2 days before.

Bharat (Tier 2/3): Muhurat is non-negotiable. Delivery after muhurat is useless. I know dealers in Satara and Saharanpur who keep cars ready with number plates covered, just to uncover at exact muhurat time. If your brand can't do exact-time delivery, you lose Bharat.

EDUCATION ANGLE: THE NEW MUHURAT

Even educated, atheist Indians follow Muhurat Tax.

The Bangalore techie who says "I don't believe in astrology" will still wait to close his house registration till after Shradh ends. Not because he believes. But because his mother will feel bad if he doesn't. And mother's bad feeling is more expensive than rent for 15 days.

And now, there is a new muhurat - the secular muhurat.

Salary Day (1st), Flipkart Big Billion Days, iPhone Launch Day, PayDay Sale. These are new astrological dates for Gen Z. They don't wait for pandit, they wait for notification. "Add to cart till sale starts" is new fasting.

Same psychology, new pandit. Earlier pandit was in temple. Now pandit is in the algorithm.

HOW TO WIN IF YOU ARE A BRAND: THE MUHURAT PLAYBOOK

So what are the take-outs for marketers and agencies?

  1. Make a Muhurat Calendar, Not Just a Marketing Calendar.

Take 2026-27 Hindu calendar. Mark Akshaya Tritiya (May 2), Rath Yatra (June 26), Sawan (July-Aug), Navaratri (Oct 9-17), Dussehra (Oct 19), Dhanteras (Nov 6), Diwali (Nov 8). For South, add Pongal (Jan 14), Ugadi (March 19), Varalakshmi (Aug 21). Your entire supply chain should breathe around these tentpole dates, not your quarterly targets.

  1. Sell Time Slot, Not Product.

On Dhanteras, don't advertise "Buy Gold". Advertise "Only 42 delivery slots left for Dhanteras Muhurat". Titan did this last year – "Book your Dhanteras moment". You are selling a 30-minute window, not a necklace.

  1. The Pitra Paksha Silence Rule.

For 15 days in September, Hindus won't buy. Don't shout offers. Be silent. Like good brands do. Use those 15 days to service, repair, clean – build goodwill. Then come back on Day 1 of Navaratri with "Shubharambh" – people will remember you respected their pause.

  1. The Double Muhurat Product.

Best hack: Make your product itself a muhurat. Lakshmi coins embossed with year, First Delivery Key with family name and muhurat time engraved, property papers with "Shubh Labh" stamp. Product becomes prasad.

I will end with a story from my own family.

Last year, my cousin in Gurgaon booked a flat. Builder said registration on Tuesday. His father said no, Tuesday is not shubh, do it Friday. Builder said Friday is full, Tuesday is last. Father said then wait 3 weeks for next muhurat. Cousin was furious – he would lose rent, EMIs start.

But he waited.

Three weeks later, on that Friday, his father, who is 78 and rarely goes out, came to the registrar office. He sat in the chair, put his hand on the papers, and blessed it. He was happy. The flat became a home that day.

My cousin told me later – "I thought I was paying Muhurat Tax – 3 weeks rent wasted. No, actually I was buying my father's peace for Rs 15,000. Well worth it."

That is the final lesson.

Economists see Muhurat Tax as inefficiency.

Indians know it is insurance. Insurance that when you bring something new home, your family feels it came at the right time.

And in India, right time is never clock time.

Right time is cosmos time.

And cosmos, my friend, always charges a small tax. We pay it happily.
