India Inc. collectively spent ₹29,986.92 crore on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in FY 2023–24, spanning over 51,966 projects by more than 1,871 listed companies. While this marks a robust engagement with CSR mandates, data compiled by RED Lab reveals deep regional and thematic imbalances in fund allocation.

Delhi, Maharashtra Lead Spending; Aspirational Districts Left Behind

A significant 61% of total CSR expenditure originated from companies based in Maharashtra and New Delhi, reinforcing the dominance of metropolitan corporate hubs in driving philanthropic investments. However, the report flags a stark concern—only 3% of total funds reached aspirational districts, indicating a persistent regional disparity despite government push for inclusive development.

Healthcare and Education Dominate, Sustainability Lags

When broken down by sector, Education led the chart with ₹10,085 crore (33%) in allocations, followed by Healthcare at ₹7,000 crore (23%) and Rural Development at ₹5,000 crore (17%). Livelihood enhancement and environment & sustainability—critical for long-term grassroots impact—received only 6% and 7% respectively. Experts warn that underfunding these sectors could undermine climate resilience and employment generation goals.

HDFC Bank Tops CSR Spending List

Among the top 10 CSR spenders, HDFC Bank emerged as the leader with ₹954.3 crore, followed by Reliance Industries (₹900 crore), TCS (₹827 crore), and ONGC (₹634.5 crore). The list was rounded off by Power Grid Corporation of India with a spend of ₹330.5 crore.

States Reaping the Maximum Benefit

Maharashtra, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu, and Uttar Pradesh featured among the top beneficiaries in terms of state-wise CSR inflow, mirroring the corporate headquarters’ geography. Gujarat alone received over ₹2,200 crore, while Tamil Nadu and UP followed with ₹1,562.48 crore and ₹1,152.57 crore respectively.

Philanthropy at a Crossroads

The report concludes that Indian philanthropy is at a pivotal juncture. With growing corporate interest and strategic approaches to CSR, there's a visible shift from cheque-writing charity to targeted impact. Yet, the findings underline an urgent need for better fund decentralisation, strategic focus on underserved districts, and prioritisation of long-neglected sectors like sustainability and animal welfare.

As CSR matures into a serious pillar of corporate reputation and responsibility, the next challenge lies not in how much companies spend—but where and how they choose to spend it.
