IRS 2009 R2: Mixed bag for Marathi publications

As in the case of most other language publications, Marathi publications, too, have a mixed bag of highs and lows as per the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2009 R2 data. Just four of the Top 10 Marathi dailies have shown growth, while in magazines, three out of the four top Marathi magazines have registered growths.

IRS 2009 R2: Mixed bag for Marathi publications

As in the case of most other language publications, Marathi publications, too, have a mixed bag of highs and lows as per the Indian Readership Survey (IRS) 2009 R2 data. Just four of the Top 10 Marathi dailies have shown growth. Lokmat, the highest read Marathi publication, is at No 1 position and has seen a growth of 4.64 per cent in average issue readership (AIR). At No 2 is Daily Sakal, which has seen a decline of 3.69 per cent in AIR. Pudhari at No 3 has seen a fairly good growth of 6.83 per cent in AIR, while Punya Nagari has registered a decline of 4.62 per cent. Tarun Bharat (Belgaum, Maharashtra and Goa) has also seen an 8.51 per cent decline.

Loksatta is placed at sixth position and has seen a decline of 8.30 per cent in AIR, while Maharashtra Times has seen a 5. 86 per cent drop. Deshonatti, on the other hand, has seen a 3.21 per cent growth, while Navakal at No 9, too, has seen a good growth in AIR of 14.93 per cent. Saamana, however, has registered a steep decline of 21.07 per cent.

Among Marathi magazines, three out of the four top magazines have shown growth, which is an encouraging sign. Girhashobhika, the No 1 Marathi magazine, has grown by 19.62 per cent. Saptahik Sakal has seen a growth of 11.40 per cent growth, while Chitralekha Marathi has seen a 17.14 per cent growth. Lokprabha is the only magazine among the Top five to have registered a drop in AIR of 1.64 per cent.
