The Delhi High Court has granted interim protection to podcaster and entrepreneur Raj Shamani by restraining any unauthorised commercial use of his name, image or identity.
The court refused to include parody or satirical content within this protection at this stage. The order was passed by Justice Manmeet Pritam Singh Arora, as reported by Bar and Bench.
The court said AI-generated videos, deepfakes or digitally altered content that impersonates Shamani cannot be produced or circulated without his permission. However, concerns around parody and satire will have to be raised separately, as the judge noted that bringing both issues under one injunction would complicate the trial.
Appearing for Shamani, senior advocate Diya Kapur said the creator was facing a surge of fake endorsements, deepfakes and impersonator accounts. She pointed to alleged fake promotions linked to an entity called Tax Buddy and Telegram chatbots that used his name, image and tone to offer financial advice and promote crypto schemes.
The court declined to pass broad directions on hashtags or memes, stating that concerns about mocking or demeaning content fall in a different category. Telegram’s counsel, Madhav Khosla, said the platform would remove specific chatbots that violate its policies.
