The Press Club of India has expressed concern over the inclusion of Tongam Rina, senior journalist and deputy editor of The Arunachal Times, in the search warrant applications filed by the Arunachal Pradesh Police in connection with the violence that erupted in Pasighat on October 23.
The Press Club also condemned attempts by state authorities to intimidate and harass journalists covering the ongoing protests against the Siang Dam project.
In this regard, the Press Club of India issued an official statement on October 30, 2026. The statement stated that investigations into violence and property damage cannot be used as a pretext to intimidate journalists covering a protest. The Press Club urged the Arunachal Pradesh Police to immediately ensure that Tongam Rina and other journalists are not subjected to such harassment simply for carrying out their professional duties.
The statement also mentioned Tongam Rina's journalistic experience. According to the Press Club, Rina has an impressive record of reporting on environmental, political, and governance issues in the state. Therefore, including her name in the list of search warrant requests without any justification or connection to the violence is a serious attack on press freedom, which cannot be accepted in a democracy like India.
