Videocon's zero paisa per second – Old plans, new names
While Videocon is advertising its zero paisa per second call plan, what they are really doing is offering free bundles for Videocon users.
Videocon has been airing ads of late that say talk at 0 paise per second. While that’s a great tagline, here’s a look at how it will actually work for the users:
1. 10 minutes local calls to any network free per day for six months: This offer is available with the V202 and V1292 models.
2. 10 minutes local calls to any network free per day for one year: This offer is available with the V1404, V1428, V1676 models.
3. 30 minutes local calls to any network free per day for one year and unlimited calls to Videocon local numbers for one year: This offer is with the V7400 and V7500 models, the Videocon Android models.
Clearly, the actual offer isn’t quite as dramatic as the ads, which tease the death of the 1 paise per second tariff, which is virtually the industry standard now, and is essentially a free call bundle such as many operators have offered in the past. What makes it stand out though is that not only are some of the benefits available only within the Videocon network (which has been done before), but they are very specific to the handsets one is buying.
In international markets like the US and Europe, cell phones are sold at highly subsidised rates to sell mobile connections from the operators. In India, the very opposite trend has prevailed, and so in the race to the bottom for rates, Videocon gives us zero paise per second, where they are essentially rewarding people who buy their phones to use on their network, with some free minutes for up to one year, which is essentially just a new way of spinning existing offers.
The call rate offer is actually pretty good for the Videocon Android model, though since the handset itself costs over Rs 10,000, compared to even Samsung, which has a sub-10k Android offering, it might not actually be the best value proposition for users.
