In a move that could reshape the contours of India’s rapidly intensifying streaming wars, artificial intelligence leader OpenAI is set to partner with JioHotstar in order to redefine its content discovery, according to multiple sources familiar with the development.
The contours of the partnership are still emerging, but people with direct knowledge of the discussions said OpenAI and JioHotstar delegations met in New Delhi earlier this week on the sidelines of the government-hosted AI summit, where the two companies are believed to have agreed to collaborate.
The partnership will enable the streaming platform to integrate ChatGPT, allowing viewers to discover content simply by expressing their intent, mood or context. The AI-powered voice assistant moves beyond rigid keyword search, delivering intuitive, context-aware recommendations — surfacing not only what users request, but also what they may not yet realise they want — for a more seamless and personalised entertainment experience.
Speaking about the partnership, Uday Shankar, Vice Chairman of JioStar, said,"AI marks a transformative shift for the media and entertainment industry. It fundamentally disrupts every aspect of the value chain, from conceptualisation and production to discovery and monetisation. As a tech-native, user-first platform, JioStar is embedding AI at the very core of the user experience. Our partnership with OpenAI will allow viewers to discover, engage with, and even curate content simply using their voice. This is a fundamental reimagining of the entertainment experience; one that anticipates culture and feels deeply personal to every viewer.”
“Traditionally, entertainment is a one-way experience where you passively consume content - AI completely changes that dynamic.” said Fidji Simo, CEO, Applications, OpenAI. “Through our partnership with JioHotstar, we’re bringing personalized AI directly into entertainment and live sports, turning every moment into an opportunity for deeper engagement. Viewers can move seamlessly from watching to asking, from curiosity to context, and from exploration to recommendation in ways that feel natural, personal, and immediately useful.”
Timing
The timing is significant. JioStar’s flagship streaming platform, JioHotstar, has just completed its first year of operations, emerging as a formidable force in India’s OTT landscape with an estimated 500 million users and a vast content library exceeding 300,000 hours.
“At that scale”, executives said, “traditional discovery systems built on static demographic targeting are no longer sufficient.Instead, artificial intelligence is fast becoming the defining competitive layer.”
While global streaming platforms such as Netflix and Prime Video have long deployed AI-driven recommendation systems, JioStar’s scale, distribution reach, and content diversity create a uniquely complex—and potentially powerful—AI application layer.
JioStar’s platform spans live sports, regional entertainment, movies, and television content across 19 languages, alongside integration with India’s largest telecom ecosystem via Reliance Industries.
Its sports portfolio alone—including marquee events such as the Indian Premier League and global cricket tournaments governed by the International Cricket Council—creates real-time, high-intensity engagement spikes that demand dynamic content delivery and personalization.
“Managing discovery at this scale without AI is practically impossible,” said a senior media executive. “The challenge is not content availability—it’s helping users find the right content instantly.”
From content platforms to intelligent platforms
The partnership comes at a time when streaming platforms globally are undergoing a structural shift—from content aggregation engines to intelligence-driven engagement ecosystems.
At the India Digital Summit earlier this year, Kiran Mani, CEO of JioStar, had outlined the philosophical pivot underway. “AI is driving a shift from instruction-led technology to intuitive experiences,” Mani said. “Platforms now use real-time behavioral signals—pausing, skipping, searching, and on-screen interactions—to recommend content, rather than relying on demographic data or past viewing history.”
“The focus is shifting from being present on every screen to being intelligent across every screen,” he added. “Intelligence now enables platforms to better understand viewer intent and respond in real time.”
The OpenAI partnership is expected to accelerate precisely this transition—embedding conversational AI, real-time recommendation engines, and potentially voice-led or chat-driven discovery interfaces within JioStar’s ecosystem.
Strategic importance for OpenAI
For OpenAI, the partnership represents a critical step in embedding its technology deeper into consumer-facing ecosystems in India, one of its fastest-growing markets globally.
Altman recently disclosed that India now has more than 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users, making it the company’s second-largest market after the United States.
India’s scale, young demographic profile, and rapidly expanding internet penetration make it a strategic battleground for global AI companies seeking mass adoption.
OpenAI formally established its New Delhi office in August 2025, signaling a long-term commitment to the market. It has also adapted its pricing strategy for India’s cost-sensitive consumer base, including introducing a low-cost tier that was later made free for Indian users for a limited period to accelerate adoption.
India’s importance extends beyond users to infrastructure and distribution.
“India is not just a market,” said one technology executive. “It’s a deployment environment where AI can reach hundreds of millions of users rapidly.”
