Forget about 360 degree videos and looking at products up close in 2D, Facebook technology now supports closeup 3D rendering.

Facebook has rolled out the support for the industry-standard file-format for Facebook 3D posts. With this latest update, artists and creators can easily share rich, high-quality 3D content on Facebook from a variety of sources.

The update brings with it support for textures, lighting, and realistic rendering techniques.
“So from rough to shiny, metallic to soft, beautifully detailed 3D art can now come alive on Facebook. 3D posts also support unlit workflows for photogrammetry and stylized art,” said Aykud Gönen, product manager, Facebook Social VR, in a blogpost.

Brands have been experimenting with this feature. LEGO, Sony, Mayfair, Jurassic World, and Clash Royale have all experimented with this feature already. This is what posts can look like here on:

This is a game changer for how brands can use the Facebook platform. Facebook believes in a “seamless digital world where people can share immersive experiences and objects like these across VR, AR and Facebook News Feed. To get there, we'll work on supporting even higher quality 3D models, enabling interactive animations and bringing 3D content into the real world using AR. This is only the beginning, and we look forward to seeing the ecosystem of 3D content grow on Facebook as people, developers and artists contribute their creativity,” Gönen noted.

Indian brands, we are looking at you now.
