Getty Images and Perplexity have entered into a global multi-year licensing agreement that allows Perplexity to display Getty’s creative and editorial images across its AI-powered search and discovery tools. The partnership integrates Getty’s API technology into Perplexity’s workflows, enabling access to high-quality visuals that enhance the platform’s visual storytelling and user experience.

As part of the deal, Perplexity will improve how it displays imagery by including proper image credits and source links to educate users on the legal use of licensed content.

The collaboration comes as AI firms face increasing legal scrutiny over the use of copyrighted materials in training and content generation. Getty Images, which also licenses content to platforms such as iStock and Unsplash, has previously taken legal action against Stability AI over image scraping.

Perplexity, meanwhile, has faced lawsuits from publishers like Nikkei and Asahi Shimbun and has introduced a revenue-sharing model with partners such as TIME and Der Spiegel.

The deal highlights a broader trend of AI companies pursuing licensing partnerships to balance innovation with intellectual property rights, aiming to create reliable, transparent, and legally compliant AI ecosystems.
