Dr Sivanthi Adityan, proprietor of Tamil daily Dina Thanthi, passed away recently in Chennai after prolonged illness.

Adityan, an educationist, industrialist and a philanthropist, was a Padma Shri recipient in 2009. He had held several important positions in international federations such as Vice-President, FIVB, and AVC and Chairman, OCA Finance Commission.

Prior to taking charge as CEO of Dina Thanthi, Adityan had worked his way, serving as a reporter and sub-editor. Dina Thanthi, which was printed from three cities – Chennai, Madurai and Trichy – is today printed from 15 cities across the country, due to Adityan’s efforts.

He also published an evening newspaper, Malai Malar, ran a radio channel and rechristened the English news channel that he acquired from The Hindu-NDTV and turned it into a Tamil news channel.

Adityan was also Chairman & Managing Director of Sun Paper Mill.

His efforts in sports were well appreciated. He had received the Olympic order of merit from the International Olympic Committee in 1995 and a gold medal from the International Volleyball Federation for his contribution to the sport in India. He also got an indoor volleyball stadium constructed in Adithanar College, Tiruchendur, where the Indian team used to practice.
