The Bar Council of India on Monday has reportedly warned lawyers and legal influencers about unethical advertising and promotional activities on social media.
According to a PTI report, the BCI flagged the unethical practices of advocates advertising their legal services through social media, promotional videos and influencer engagement.
The BCI has also denounced the involvement of celebs, actors and digital media platforms as promotional tools, which clearly violate Rule 36, Chapter II, Part VI of the BCI Rules.
The council has also referred to a judgement of the Madras High Court which it said has termed advocacy as a noble profession, obscuring their commercial motives.
It also directed attention to the BCI rules, which say that “an advocate shall not solicit work or advertise, either directly or indirectly, whether by circulars, advertisements, touts, personal communications, interviews not warranted by personal relations, furnishing or inspiring newspaper comments or producing his photographs to be published in connection with cases in which he has engaged or concerned.
The council said legal professionals advertising their services on Quikr, Sulekha, Just Dial and Grotal will face severe action.
