Sandeep Bamzai takes over as Editor, Mail Today

“A die-hard print and a die-hard news junkie” was how the new editor of Mail Today, Sandeep Bamzai, described himself, when exchange4media caught up with him. So, moving from the broadcast space to print would be no great shakes. He pointed out that he had been in print for a large part of his career. Bamzai assumed his new role from Monday, January 2, 2012. He replaces Bharat Bhushan, who had quit as Editor in December 2011 after being with the paper for four and a half years.

Ashish Bagga, CEO, India Today Group, has confirmed the development to exchange4media.

Prior to taking over as Mail Today’s Editor, Bamzai had been working as Senior Editor with Headlines Today, the English news channel from the India Today Group. This development comes close on the heels of Manoj Sharma taking over from Rahul Thappa as COO of Mail Today in December last year.

“Today, we have an environment that is information-led (and very often it is information-overload),” noted Bamzai. Speaking about ‘news’, Bamzai chose his words carefully as he said, “Unfortunately, news has become a four-letter word. It’s how you present news that is important.” He further said, “Consumption patterns have changed. I mean, consumption of media. Today, you cannot be text-heavy, you need graphics, visuals… you need to build a differentiator to cut through the clutter.”

And Mail Today, being a tabloid would be a huge advantage, as he said, “A tabloid allows you that much more freedom to differentiate.” He affirmed, “Mail Today is a solid paper, and I will try to take it to the next level.” And, as for making his presence felt at Mail Today, he modestly said, “The changes will be visible shortly.”

Tracing his career, Bamzai has mostly worked as a business journalist and has worked in senior editorial positions in some of the biggest publishing houses in three different cities – Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

He was Business Editor with Hindustan Times, and before moving to New Delhi from Mumbai, he has been Senior Editor with Business India, Editor of Dalal Street Journal, Assistant Editor of The Illustrated Weekly, Deputy Editor of Sunday Observer and Editor - Special Projects at The Times of India Group. He has also worked as Executive Editor with Plus Channel.

Bamzai had started his career with The Statesman, Kolkata. In 1986, he moved to Mumbai to join The Indian Express and has spent more than 15 years in Mumbai.
