Television journalism is usually narrated through its anchors, editors and breaking-news moments. Yet some of its most consequential work takes place beyond the camera—identifying the right voices, earning the confidence of stakeholders and turning an editorial idea into a public platform that can endure. Mohit Roy Sharma has spent nearly three decades working in that less visible but critical space.
Currently Senior Executive Editor–Outreach at NDTV, Sharma has built a career across public relations, television news, audience measurement, corporate communications and large-format media properties. The sequence of designations tells only part of the story. The stronger thread running through his journey is an ability to connect editorial purpose with the people and institutions capable of advancing it.
Sharma began his professional journey in 1998 with Integral PR Services, where he worked in client servicing and media relations. His portfolio included brands such as Coca-Cola, Bacardi-Martini, General Motors and Tetra Pak. Those early years gave him a grounding in reputation management, crisis communication and the discipline of translating a business objective into a credible public narrative—skills that would later become central to his work in news media.
His longest professional innings came at the India Today Group, where he spent close to 15 years across two stints. As Editor–Outreach and later Senior Editor with the group’s news channels, Sharma worked at the intersection of editorial, communications and relationship-building. He was associated with high-impact properties including Agenda Aaj Tak, Sahitya Aaj Tak, Salaam Cricket, the India Today Conclave and India Today@Davos.
These platforms became more than extensions of television programming. They helped news brands create conversations beyond the daily bulletin, bring political, cultural and business leaders onto a common stage and build direct relationships with audiences. Sharma’s contribution lay in understanding that the strength of such a platform depends not only on its theme, but also on the relevance of its participants and the trust behind every invitation.
One of the more revealing decisions in his career came in 2013, when he took a break from work to return to the classroom. He studied public relations, marketing and management at the University of Winnipeg in Canada before resuming his media journey. For a professional already well established in his field, the decision reflected a quality that has remained important to his evolution: the willingness to learn again.
His move to BARC India in 2019 widened his vantage point. As Vice President, he worked with broadcasters and senior industry stakeholders at the centre of India’s television measurement ecosystem. A subsequent role as Group Vice President, Corporate Communications at Wave Group took him into a diversified corporate environment, adding another layer to his experience in institutional reputation and stakeholder engagement.
In 2021, Sharma joined ABP Network as Executive Editor and was elevated to Senior Executive Editor in 2024. It was a significant chapter in which he led communications and outreach while helping shape marquee intellectual properties such as Ideas of India, The Southern Rising and Roots & Rhythms. The assignments brought together the different strands of his career: editorial instinct, strategic communication, stakeholder management and the ability to execute complex public-facing platforms.
After a brief stint heading communications and outreach at India TV in 2025, Sharma moved to NDTV in July that year. At a news organisation navigating expansion and change, outreach is far from ceremonial. It influences who enters the conversation, how the institution engages with leaders across sectors and how its reputation is sustained beyond the newsroom.
As Mohit Roy Sharma celebrates his birthday, his journey offers a reminder that media institutions are built not only by the people seen on screen, but also by those who create the connective tissue behind them.
