Madan, the Gentleman!
My accidental entry into PR, followed by watching Indian public relations evolve from a peripheral support function to a boardroom-relevant discipline in corporate India, has been a remarkable journey. I worked with distinguished chairmen and professional leadership teams across organisations such as Aptech, the Mahindra Group and the Vedanta Group — a journey marked by a deep and enduring partnership with Adfactors PR.
I have had the opportunity to meet and interact with Madan Bahal on several occasions, and I consistently chose his firm to represent every organisation I worked with as a communications professional for over four decades. He can be sharp and convincing when he pitches — and above all, he exudes trust.
As he turns seventy, it is worth pausing to recognise not just his longevity, but the standards he helped set for the profession. As Managing Director of Adfactors PR, Madan has played a defining role in shaping how corporate India understands reputation, credibility and strategic communication.
In a fast-paced industry, Madan has consistently kept his feet firmly on the ground — on a lighter note, occasionally dug in his heels — while keeping his organisation independent and proudly Indian. This, mind you, while working with global clients with a footprint in India, as well as several marquee Indian corporates who hold him and his team in deep regard.
Long before “strategic communications” became a fashionable term, Madan led the pack with conviction and a deep understanding of the long-term value he brings to the table for his clients.
My own interactions with him reinforced my decision to work consistently with his team across sectors I led communications for — from technology at Aptech, to two Indian giants: the Mahindra Group, a highly respected federation of companies, and Vedanta Group, a highly regulated metals and mining conglomerate.
Adfactors’ growth into India’s largest communications consultancy did not happen by accident or haste. It was built on trust, leadership and credibility — qualities that earned it a true seat at the table. Equally important has been Madan’s influence on people. Many of today’s senior professionals across agencies and corporates trace their professional discipline back to his mentorship. I have met many young professionals who carry personal anecdotes and deep respect for this incredible, understated gentleman.
Madan has contributed in more ways than one. His support for the PR industry has been stellar, and he has often chosen to stay away from the spotlight.
At seventy, Madan remains deeply engaged with the changing contours of communication — digital acceleration, stakeholder activism, and the growing overlap between business, policy and society. Yet his core belief remains unchanged: credibility and contribution are the most valuable currencies his business owns.
As we mark this milestone, we celebrate more than an individual. Madan represents an industry leader who ensured that Indian public relations grew not just in size, but in stature.
On a personal note, many years ago — after I had superannuated and was no longer “in power,” as they say — I reached out to him for support for a maiden event organised by young professionals I mentored. He did not hesitate for a moment and came forward instantly. That act of solidarity and trust for a former industry colleague speaks volumes about his integrity, respect and personal values.
Madan Bahal, a veteran industry colleague — my compliments on your enduring contributions to the PR industry in India.
Many more innings in store, my friend.
