As Madan Bahal turns 70, the milestone feels less like a number and more like a measurement of impact! Seven decades of lived experience, and a quarter-century of shaping the conscience and craft of Indian public relations with a steadiness that has become his signature.

If Indian PR had a “national treasure” category, we’d be done with the debate before the first cup of chai was poured. And yet, the man himself would probably wave it away with that familiar half-smile that has equal parts modesty and mischief. And he would get back to doing what he has always done, making the hard things sound honest, the urgent things sound calm, and the impossible things… well, merely “challenging, but manageable.”

In a profession, often confused with glitter and noise, Madan has always stood for something rarer: substance. His resilience is the quiet kind that holds the room steady. The kind that shows up early, stays late, and keeps the ship on course even when the seas are doing their best impression of a tsunami.

Tenacity, in his world, is not stubbornness. It’s conviction with patience. It’s the refusal to accept sloppy thinking, especially when everyone is tired and temptation is high. It’s the gentle (but unmistakable) insistence that “spin” is never a substitute for spine. He has guided companies through IPO’s, M&As, disputes, litigations, issues, crises, the milestone moments when the stakes are high and the margin for error is low. And in those moments, he doesn’t chase attention. He chases clarity. He doesn’t sell confidence. He earns trust.

What makes him extraordinary is not only what he has built viz. Adfactors PR, India’s largest and most recognized public relations firm, but how he has built it: learning-led, talent-first, values-forward. His recognitions are many and deserved. But the truest award is the trust he commands across generations and sectors. People don’t just respect Madan. They rely on him. Which, in our line of work, is the highest compliment.

And then there’s the part of him that makes you smile even as you’re taking notes. The storyteller beneath the strategist. As a client, I’ve seen it up close. When it came to announcing the AdFactors partnership with Godrej, about a decade back, he didn’t reach for the usual safe-and-sensible script or a press release. Madan reached for history and heart: the Parsis arriving on Indian shores and offering the metaphor of adding sugar to milk, an assurance that they would blend in, enrich, and sweeten without displacing what already was. Madan indeed, asked for a glass of milk and added sugar to it as we signed the contract. It was elegant. It was warm. It was unmistakably him. A message with meaning, served without melodrama. And the relation continues to flourish.

On his 70th birthday, I find myself thinking this is what he does best. He makes relationships feel like belonging. He makes strategy feel like wisdom. He makes even the toughest conversations feel… less terrifying. (Which is no small achievement, considering some of those conversations begin with the words, “We may have a situation.”)

And yes, there is humor in that too. Because Madan has a gift for handling intensity without letting it become heavy. He can deliver the most serious counsel with the calm of someone ordering chai, and somehow, you walk out feeling lighter. Well, if there were an Olympic event for drinking multiple cups of chai and yet having steady nerves, he’d win gold and then politely insist the team should get the credit!

So, here’s to you, Madan. 70 years young, more curious, super sharp, still quietly unstoppable. May the next chapter bring you more time for the things you love, fewer “urgent” messages at odd hours and the deep satisfaction of seeing an entire profession better because you chose, day after day, to raise the bar.

And in your heart, I hope you carry it for sure that at Godrej Industries Group, we don’t only admire your craft, we value your counsel, cherish your constancy, and feel, in the deepest sense, sweeter for having you by our side. Happy 70th, Madan. May your days be filled with love, laughter, and just the right amount of perfectly added sugar.
