medThe Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) commissioned 57 new community radio stations during financial year 2023-24. The information has been shared by the MIB in its annual report of 2023-24 stated that
According to the report, as of March 31, 2024, there are 494 operational community radio stations in India. Of these, 283 are run by NGOs, 191 by educational institutions, and 20 by Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs).
The report also highlighted the government's ongoing efforts to support the community radio sector. The government has approved a central sector scheme titled "Supporting Community Radio Movement in India". The scheme also promotes capacity-building initiatives, awareness programs, regional conferences and the annual community radio awards.
“Since the community radio movement began, a total of 680 Letters of Intent (LoIs) have been issued for community radio stations, out of which 603 organizations have signed the Grant of Permission Agreement (GOPA). As of March 2024, 494 of these stations are now operational,” stated the report.
In addition to community radio, the report also shared insights on private FM radio stations. As of March 31, 2024, 388 private FM channels are operational across 113 cities in 26 states and five union territories.
Since the launch of private FM radio in 2000, the government has earned Rs 6,647.77 crore through various fees, including non-refundable one-time entry and migration fees, annual license fees, and tower rentals.
