There are leaders who follow trends, and then there are leaders who set the table where trends are debated, dissected, and decided. Dr. Annurag Batra has always been the latter. As the Founder, Chairman and Editor-in-Chief of exchange4media and BW Businessworld, he didn’t just build media brands, he built arenas where industries could see themselves, challenge themselves, and ultimately grow. On his birthday today, it feels fitting to celebrate not just the milestones of one individual, but the ripple effect of a career that has touched every corner of India’s media and marketing landscape.

More than two decades ago, Dr. Batra started exchange4media, giving the advertising, marketing and media industry a dedicated voice. What began as a single platform soon grew into a vibrant group that included PITCH, IMPACT, Franchisee Plus, Realty Plus and samachar4media, each publication carving out its own influence. In 2013, he acquired BW Businessworld, a storied publication, and reimagined it for the modern era by expanding it into digital, events, and focused communities.

Global recognition has followed his work. He was elected a member of the International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (IATAS), joining more than 900 professionals across 60 countries. His connection with the International Emmy Awards is equally notable: he has hosted India’s semi-final judging rounds, putting the country firmly in the global spotlight of world-class television content.

Dr. Batra’s voice has also carried onto international stages. At Oxford’s Saïd Business School, he urged the world to “smell the chai, not the coffee”, a call to embrace India’s cultural confidence and pluralism with the same pride that other nations hold their icons.

Closer to home, his contributions have been both analytical and visionary. He has anchored conversations around industry trends with the dentsu-e4m Digital Advertising Report, which mapped India’s ad market growth to ₹93,166 crore in 2023 and projected its surge to ₹1,12,453 crore by 2025. His simple but powerful philosophy of the “3 Cs” - Content, Connect and Context, has become a guiding principle for marketers navigating digital disruption.

Even as he shaped institutions, Dr. Batra also backed new ones. His role as an angel investor saw him place early bets on ventures like IWMBuzz Media, a digital entertainment platform with 20 million monthly visitors, and Fandrum, a fan community startup. These weren’t just investments, but a statement of belief in the next generation of media entrepreneurs.

Beyond the boardrooms and industry forums, Dr. Batra has always remained deeply grounded. With a B.Tech in Computer Science and an MBA from MDI Gurgaon. He often credits his journey to faith, spirituality, and the values instilled by his parents. A die-hard optimist, he lives by the belief that when you make your hobby your profession, work becomes joy. Passionate about mentoring, he also practices “reverse mentoring,” learning from young entrepreneurs even as he guides them, and has served as Chairman of the Advisory Board at FMCC as well as a Governor on the Board of his alma mater MDI.

Through all of this, what defines him isn’t just scale but intent. To build. To connect. To constantly reimagine what the media and marketing ecosystem can be.

On his birthday, the industry celebrates more than his leadership titles or accolades. It celebrates a man who turned conversations into institutions, and institutions into movements.
