Mobile phone handset major Nokia has introduced two new models of CDMA mobile phones to the Indian market. The group has initially launched Nokia 3125 and Nokia 2112, while five more in the queue.
Nokia launched its new goodies at the company's `CDMA: Partnership for growth' Technology Summit in Mumbai. While Nokia 3125 is positioned as a phone for mobile professionals, the Nokia 2112 is an entry-level CDMA handset. The models are expected to be commercially available from the third quarter of 2004. "India is one of the fastest growing mobile markets and we intend to introduce five more CDMA models from our total portfolio in this country," said Soren J Petersen, Senior Vice-President and General Manager, Nokia.
Referring to the exclusive launches for the Asia Pacific region (Apac), he said the group was aiming at a 25-30 per cent marketshare in the Indian CDMA space. To meet the increasing challenges in the growing CDMA market in this region, Nokia has recently set up a Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) research and development centre in Navi Mumbai.
According to Sanjeev Sharma, Managing Director, Nokia Customer and Market Operations, India, with the rapid growth of Nokia’s CDMA customer base in India and the Apac region, the R&D facility in Navi Mumbai would help the company provide centralised software support and technical expertise to cater to the specific market needs in this region and also in countries like Australia, New Zealand, Indonesia and Thailand. Globally, Nokia has R&D centres in 11 countries.
