Some people build successful businesses. A few build industries. Rarer still are those who build institutions that continue to thrive long after they step away. Ashok Kumar Das belonged to that rare league. His journey was extraordinary not because of the positions he held, but because of the lasting impact he created at every stage of his career.

For nearly four decades, Ashok stood at the forefront of India's market research industry, quietly shaping its evolution. In 1983 Mr. R K Swamy founded Hansa Research Group, and post Ashok's successful stint of 14 years with ORG MARG, which later became AC Nielsen, Ashok embarked on his journey with Hansa Research Group. Those who worked alongside him remember him as a thoughtful leader, an exceptional mentor and above all, a man of unwavering integrity. He believed that research was never just about numbers. It was about understanding people, asking the right questions, and uncovering insights that could make a real difference.

His professional journey began after graduating from IIT Kharagpur and IIM Calcutta, followed by an early stint at Exide Industries. However, it was in market research that he found his calling. Ashok began his professional journey at a time when market research in India was still in its infancy. Consumer insights and data-driven decision-making were concepts that had not yet assumed the strategic importance they hold today. Armed with a sharp intellect, an innate curiosity about people and markets, and a passion for understanding human behaviour, he chose a path that would eventually transform an entire industry.

He started his career with IMRB International, where he laid the foundations of his understanding of consumer research and analytics. Even in these early years, colleagues recognized his exceptional ability to combine analytical rigour with practical business thinking. The next significant chapter of his career unfolded during his fourteen-year association with ORG-MARG, where he eventually became President, Customized and Media Research. This period proved to be one of the most defining phases of his professional life.

During this period, Ashok spearheaded several pioneering initiatives that fundamentally reshaped India's media and research landscape. He was instrumental in creating the Indian National Television Audience Measurement (INTAM), India's first television meter service. He also played a leading role in developing the Indian Readership Survey (IRS), which became one of the country's most trusted and influential studies on media consumption and readership patterns. He also introduced Household Premiumness Index (HPI), a more nuanced way of understanding Indian consumers and their aspirations. These initiatives revolutionized how advertisers, publishers, broadcasters, marketers and agencies understood audiences and planned their businesses

In 2002, he embarked on what would become the defining chapter of his professional life—his leadership of Hansa Research Group. Over the next seventeen years, he transformed Hansa Research from a respected Indian company into one of the country's largest and most admired independent consumer insights organizations.

Under his stewardship, Hansa became synonymous with excellence, innovation, and entrepreneurial spirit. He firmly believed that Indian expertise could compete with the best in the world and built the organization with that conviction at its core. Under Mr. Das's guidance, Hansa served clients across geographies and eventually served clients in more than one hundred countries. His contributions, however, were never confined to organizational success alone.

In 2011, he was elected President of the Market Research Society of India (MRSI), one of the highest honours bestowed by the industry. During his tenure from 2011 to 2013, he focused on expanding industry participation, strengthening professional standards, promoting quality improvement initiatives, and investing in the training and development of researchers. He firmly believed that the future of the industry depended on nurturing talent and continuously raising professional benchmarks.

Beyond boardrooms and strategy discussions, Ashok was an educator at heart. He regularly contributed to forums such as ESOMAR and MRSI and served as a guest lecturer at prestigious institutions including IIM Ahmedabad and IIT Bombay. Through these engagements, he inspired and mentored countless professionals and students.

In 2019, after leading Hansa Research for seventeen remarkable years, Ashok transitioned from the role of CEO to Senior Advisor.

The industry formally recognized his extraordinary contributions when he was conferred the Lifetime Achievement Award at the MRSI Golden Key Awards 2024, presented in February 2025. The honour was a fitting tribute to a man whose vision and leadership had profoundly shaped the evolution of market research industry in India.

Yet, if one were to ask those who knew him what made him special, they would seldom begin with his achievements. They would speak about his humility.

They would remember his calm presence in the middle of difficult decisions, his ability to listen before he spoke, and the confidence he placed in young professionals. He never sought the spotlight, preferring instead to let ideas, people, and the quality of work speak for themselves. Many who started their careers under his guidance went on to become respected leaders in the industry, carrying forward lessons that extended well beyond research.

Today, his absence is felt deeply.

However, the true measure of a life is not found in titles held or awards received. It is found in the values left behind, the people inspired, and the institutions strengthened. His punctuality, his enthusiasm and passion towards work will always be remembered.

“Every data that you see is wrong, unless proven otherwise” was a remark heard often from him and that pushed the team to validate any data / information shared as Hansa Research. Every project completed with integrity, every researcher who seeks to understand people with empathy, and every decision guided by ethics carries a part of Ashok Kumar Das's legacy forward. He left behind far more than a successful organization, a standard of excellence and a culture built on trust.

For Hansa Research, and for the Indian market research community, his story will always remain an enduring source of inspiration.
