The Royal Calcutta Turf Club (RCTC), the oldest turf club of India, is talking to domestic and international sports channels and local Bengali television companies for live telecasts of the tradition-bound Derby race in Kolkata.

The objective of the move is to increase coverage of horse racing and expand the viewership of such events, which in turn is expected to act as an incentive for corporate houses to step up sponsorship of such sporting events.

RCTC is negotiating with Doordarshan Sports, ESPN, Star Sports and a host of local Bengali channels for the live telecast of the Derby, scheduled for January 6.

According to RCTC, corporate houses, which are willing to sponsor such events, want more exposure, which can only be ensured through live telecasts.

As of now, UB group, Eveready and HSBC are only the corporate houses that are sponsoring RCTC events. In 2000, ITC stopped sponsoring the Derby. Its place was taken by UB and the race is now called The Kingfisher Calcutta Derby Stakes.
