Veteran Urdu poet Bashir Badr passed away on 28 May 2026 at the age of 91. He was reportedly suffering from dementia.

Badr was known for his Urdu poetry, especially ghazals. He began writing poems at the age of seven and went on to build a long literary career in the language. Over the years, he wrote several poetry collections, including Ikai, Kulliyate Bashir Badr, Aahat, and more. He also published ghazals in Devanagari script under the title Ujale Apni Yadon Ke.

Apart from his literary work, Badr also served as Chairman of the Bihar Urdu Academy.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1999 and in the same year, he also received the Sahitya Akademi Award in Urdu for his poetry collection Aas.
