James Cameron’s Avatar franchise has officially secured its place in the box-office history, emerging as the highest grossing film trilogies of all time, propelled by the strong box office performance of its third instalment, Avatar: Fire and Ash. With the latest release earnings added to the previous two, the combined global gross of the trilogy now stands at approx. $5.66 billion, surpassing other major Hollywood franchises.
The official social media accounts of Avatar: Fire and Ash, on December 25th, announced Avatar franchise’s significant achievement, alongside several video clips and images from the film.

With this overhaul, Avatar franchise has managed to dethrone the beloved Star Wars, and other blockbuster series like Lord of the Rings, Jurassic World when measured on a trilogy-only basis.
The milestone underscores the extraordinary commercial power of the Avatar universe, which has delivered record-breaking numbers with just three theatrical releases spread across more than 15 years. At a time when studios are increasingly reliant on frequent sequels and spin-offs, Avatar stands out for achieving scale through fewer releases.
What sets the franchise apart is the ability to deliver box-office numbers with long gap between the releases. The film redefined theatrical spectacle in 2009, becoming the highest grossing film of all time and holding that position for over a decade. It’s sequel, the way of Water, released 13 years later, proved that the audience interest had not faded, crossing $2 billion mark globally.
The third instalment, Avatar: Fire and Ash, released in December 2025, added the final push needed to take the trilogy's cumulative earnings to $5.66 billion. While the film is still early in its theatrical run, its opening performance across international markets was strong enough to place the Avatar trilogy ahead of other major three-film franchises in box-office terms.

The success of the Avatar franchise is a reflection of both its widespread appeal on a global scale and the long-lasting influence of James Cameron's world-building. From the vast underwater scenes in the second movie to Pandora's beautiful bioluminescent landscapes, Avatar has consistently raised the bar for cinematic experience and visual grandeur.
With Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 slated for release in 2029 and 2031, respectively, the franchise is well-positioned to continue dominating the box office in the years to come.
