Microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) has acted on the behest of the Indian government, blocking 8,000 accounts amid the ongoing Operation Sindoor and rising tensions with Pakistan.
"X has received executive orders from the Indian government requiring X to block over 8,000 accounts in India, subject to potential penalties including significant fines and imprisonment of the company’s local employees. The orders include demands to block access in India to accounts belonging to international news organizations and prominent X users," X released a statement.
The platform said it would comply with the government by restricting access to the said accounts, but added that it wasn’t an easy decision. It said that X is crucial to people’s ability to access information.
X also raised concerns about legal restrictions blocking the release of the executive orders. “Publishing these orders is crucial for transparency,” it stated. “When they’re kept secret, it undermines accountability and opens the door to arbitrary decisions.”
