- Meta has preemptively reserved usernames for public figures, celebrities, and organizations to prevent impersonation, and businesses can claim existing usernames from Facebook or Instagram.
- Usernames will not be searchable within the app; only those who know the exact username can initiate contact, and users can change or remove their usernames at any time.
WhatsApp has announced the rollout of usernames, a feature that will allow users to connect without revealing their phone numbers.
The Meta-owned messaging platform will now begin allowing users to reserve usernames, with the feature set to roll out globally later this year. While users will still need a phone number to create a WhatsApp account, usernames will provide an additional layer of privacy when connecting with others.
The move comes within days of Cred founder Kunal Shah taking over as the new head of WhatsApp.

As per media reports, users can choose a unique username comprising three to 35 characters. Meta said it has reserved usernames for prominent public figures, celebrities and organisations to prevent impersonation. Businesses and creators will also be able to claim their existing Facebook or Instagram usernames on WhatsApp, where available.
According to Meta’s blog, usernames will not be searchable within the app. Only users who know a person's exact username will be able to initiate contact. Users will also be able to change or remove their usernames at any time.
