  • Cheil X, the creative agency of Cheil SWA, has won the creative pitch for Hero MotoCorp's festive season campaign, which is crucial for the two-wheeler industry in India.
  • The campaign will cover integrated creative duties across various platforms, including television, digital, and social media, aimed at enhancing consumer engagement during the festive buying period.
  • The pitch attracted several major advertising networks, highlighting the competitive landscape as companies seek innovative strategies for brand communication during high-consumption periods.
  • Hero MotoCorp is focusing on expanding its product offerings beyond commuter motorcycles to include premium and electric models, necessitating a differentiated marketing approach to maintain its leadership in the domestic market.

Cheil X, the creative agency arm of Cheil SWA that handles non-Samsung business in India, won the creative pitch for Hero MotoCorp’s upcoming festive season campaign, according to people familiar with the development.

The mandate comes ahead of the crucial festive buying period for India’s two-wheeler industry and is expected to cover integrated creative duties for Hero MotoCorp’s festive marketing initiatives. The account was contested by several major advertising networks.

e4m was first to report that Hero MotoCorp had called for a festive campaign pitch.

Cheil SWA declined to comment on the development while Hero MotoCorp did not respond to queries sent by e4m.

The win gives Cheil X a significant automotive mandate at a time when two-wheeler manufacturers are stepping up marketing investments to capture consumer demand during the festive season. The period spanning Onam, Navratri, Dussehra and Diwali is traditionally among the most important sales windows for automobile companies, with manufacturers combining advertising campaigns with new product launches, financing schemes and dealer-led promotions.

People familiar with the development said the pitch was aimed at identifying a creative partner capable of developing a high-impact campaign platform for Hero MotoCorp’s festive communication. The work is expected to span television, digital, social media and other consumer touchpoints, although the precise scope of the mandate could not be independently confirmed.

The development is significant for Cheil X as the agency continues to build its presence in large, integrated brand mandates. The agency is part of Cheil SWA, which operates across creative, digital and integrated marketing services and counts several large consumer and automotive businesses among its clients.

For Hero MotoCorp, the appointment comes at an important juncture for the brand. India’s largest two-wheeler manufacturer has been broadening its product and brand strategy beyond its traditional strength in the commuter motorcycle segment, with a greater emphasis on premium motorcycles, technology-led products and electric mobility.

The company’s electric mobility business operates under the VIDA brand, while its motorcycle portfolio spans commuter, executive and premium segments. Hero MotoCorp has also been investing in new products and technologies as competition intensifies across the domestic two-wheeler market.

The competitive landscape has become more fragmented in recent years, with established manufacturers facing competition not only from other internal-combustion-engine (ICE) players but also from a growing number of electric two-wheeler companies. This has increased the importance of differentiated brand communication, particularly during high-consumption periods such as the festive season.

For automobile manufacturers, festive advertising is closely linked to broader sales strategies. Brands typically increase media spends around the period, while dealerships roll out promotional offers and financing schemes designed to encourage purchases. New model launches and product upgrades are also frequently timed around the festive calendar.

Industry executives said competitive creative reviews have become increasingly common among large advertisers as companies seek fresh strategic thinking and integrated capabilities across television, digital, social and other consumer channels.

“Festive campaigns are among the most important brand-building and sales-driving initiatives for automobile companies, given the concentration of consumer demand during this period,” an industry executive said, requesting anonymity.

The Hero MotoCorp pitch also underscores the continuing importance of large automotive accounts for India’s advertising industry. The participation of WPP, Omnicom Advertising India and Cheil SWA had highlighted the scale and strategic importance of the assignment, with large agency networks competing for mandates that can involve substantial creative and media investments.

The appointment of Cheil X is expected to see the agency take the lead on Hero MotoCorp’s festive creative communication as the company prepares for the upcoming sales season.

The festive period is particularly important for two-wheeler manufacturers because purchases are often supported by higher consumer spending, rural demand, seasonal bonuses and promotional financing. Manufacturers therefore use the period to reinforce both brand preference and individual product propositions.

Hero MotoCorp has been seeking to defend its leadership position in the domestic two-wheeler market while simultaneously expanding into higher-value segments and international markets. Its marketing strategy has consequently had to balance the mass-market strength of its core motorcycle portfolio with newer positioning around premiumisation, technology and electric mobility.

The creative mandate is expected to play a role in bringing these broader brand priorities into Hero MotoCorp’s festive communication.

The win comes as advertising agencies continue to compete aggressively for large integrated mandates from India’s biggest consumer-facing companies.

With advertisers increasingly looking for agencies that can combine brand strategy, creative development and digital execution, festive-season pitches have become an important battleground for the country’s leading agency networks.

For Cheil X, the Hero MotoCorp mandate adds another high-profile automotive assignment to its portfolio and places the agency at the centre of one of the industry’s most commercially significant marketing periods of the year.
