WhatsApp has emerged as the most popular mobile messenger app globally, clocking in 1.6 billion monthly users. The report was released by Statista revealed that the Facebook-owned messaging app has hit the 5 billion download mark. With this, WhatsApp becomes the second non-Google entity to achieve this milestone. It is also the third most popular social network after Facebook and YouTube.

South Korea emerged as the fastest-growing WhatsApp market with downloads increasing by 56 per cent in 2019. It was a significant year for Google as it dethroned Facebook after five years as the top publisher of mobile apps in 2019.

According to analytics firm Sensor Tower, Google clocked close to 850 million downloads whereas Facebook registered 800 million. But Facebook still leads when it comes to overall downloads for the year.
