Spotify to label AI-generated artist profiles with ‘AI Persona’ badges

Spotify will begin adding “AI Persona” badges to artist profiles that represent AI-generated identities, as the streaming platform moves to give listeners greater clarity over whether the artist behind a track is a real person.
The badges will start appearing from mid-September across artist profile banners and About sections, as well as in search results and track rows within playlists.
Spotify said the move follows growing concern among listeners over artist profiles that appear to represent real musicians but are instead built around AI-generated personas.
Since August 11, artists can voluntarily disclose through Spotify for Artists that their profile represents an AI Persona. Spotify will also review profiles whose public identities appear to use photorealistic AI-generated imagery.
Profiles identified by Spotify’s review team will be notified and given the option to either self-disclose their AI status or appeal the decision.
Listeners will also be able to see whether an artist voluntarily disclosed that it was an AI Persona or whether the designation was applied following Spotify’s own review.
The company said AI Persona profiles will be excluded by default from editorial and algorithmic recommendations unless a listener already follows the artist. This means such profiles will not normally surface through Spotify’s recommendation systems to users who have not actively chosen to engage with them.
Spotify stressed that the badge will apply to the public identity of the artist, rather than to the production process behind individual songs. A human artist using generative AI tools in making music would therefore not automatically receive an AI Persona badge.
The move comes as music streaming services contend with a growing volume of AI-generated music and increasingly sophisticated synthetic artist identities, raising questions around disclosure, recommendation systems and how listeners distinguish human performers from entirely artificial acts.
Spotify’s latest measure stops short of restricting AI-generated music itself, instead focusing on transparency around the identity presented to users.
