On Friday, OpenAI announced its intention to create its first office in India, deciding to base its growth in New Delhi. In an effort to fortify ties with the government, corporations, developers, and educational institutions, the ChatGPT creator has also formally established an entity in the nation and begun employing a local staff.
India's significance to OpenAI's worldwide expansion is reflected in the decision. According to the company, India has quadrupled the number of weekly active users in the last year, making it ChatGPT's second-largest global market. India has the most students utilizing ChatGPT internationally and is one of the top five developer marketplaces in the world.
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, said, “The level of excitement and opportunity for AI in India is incredible. India has all the ingredients to become a global AI leader—amazing tech talent, a world-class developer ecosystem, and strong government support through the IndiaAI Mission. Opening our first office and building a local team is an important first step in our commitment to make advanced AI more accessible across the country and to build AI for India, and with India.”
The news comes days after OpenAI launched its ChatGPT Go plan, which is exclusive to India and costs ₹399, making higher usage caps more reasonable than those of the Plus or Pro subscriptions.
IT minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who praised the move said, “OpenAI’s decision to establish a presence in India reflects the country’s growing leadership in digital innovation and AI adoption. With strong investments in digital public infrastructure, AI talent, and enterprise-scale solutions, India is uniquely positioned to drive the next wave of AI-led transformation. As part of the IndiaAI Mission, we are building the ecosystem for trusted and inclusive AI, and we welcome OpenAI’s partnership in advancing this vision to ensure the benefits of AI reach every citizen.”
By taking this action, OpenAI hopes to strengthen its position in one of its fastest-growing sectors and closely align with India's aspirations for artificial intelligence.
