OpenAI has announced the rollout of new parental controls on ChatGPT. This will give families more ways to manage how teens interact with the platform. OpenAI shared in a blog post that it is introducing ‘linked teen accounts’.
As soon as a parent connects their ChatGPT account with their teen’s, the system activates enhanced content protections for the teen account. These include limits on ‘graphic content, viral challenges, sexual, romantic or violent roleplay, and extreme beauty ideals’. While parents can disable these settings, teens are not permitted to modify them independently.

Additional controls allow parents to customize features such as ‘set quiet hours’, ‘turn off voice mode’, ‘turn off memory’, ‘remove image generation’ and ‘opt out of model training’.
OpenAI has introduced a new ‘Parent Resource Page’, designed to help families understand how ChatGPT works and how to make the most of the new parental control features. In addition, OpenAI is working on an age prediction system that will automatically apply teen-specific settings to accounts identified as being used by individuals under 18.
