Instagram has announced that it rolling out a new 3:4 aspect ratio for photo uploads, expected to make it easier for users to share images exactly as captured by their phone cameras.
The update was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri via a post on Threads.
“Instagram now supports 3:4 aspect ratio photos – the format that almost every phone camera defaults to,” Mosseri wrote. “From now on, if you upload a 3:4 image, it’ll now appear just exactly as you shot it.”
The 3:4 ratio offers more vertical space than the traditional 1:1 square or 4:5 rectangular formats. It will apply to both single-photo posts and multi-photo carousels, providing users with greater flexibility and improved aesthetics for mobile-first viewing, news report said.
The new default setting will be automatically applied to all 3:4 images uploaded moving forward.
