On March 13, 2019, the Norwegian parliament nominated Thunberg as a candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize. The 16-year-old first came into news in 2018 when she began the school climate strikes and public speeches. She is also the first recipient of the new award, which was designed to honour a young person engaged in a fight for peace and freedom.
