On September 16, Prasoon Joshi celebrated his 54th birthday. His journey has been defined not by titles alone, but by an ability to connect art and communication, commerce and culture, in ways that leave a lasting mark.
Joshi is the CEO and CCO of McCann Worldgroup India and also serves as Chairman of McCann Asia Pacific. Over the years, he has established himself as one of the most influential voices in Indian advertising and beyond. What sets him apart is not just his leadership in the industry, but the way he has consistently bridged different worlds-advertising, film, music and public service messaging with equal ease.
Born in Almora in 1971, Prasoon Joshi grew up in a household that valued education and the arts. His parents’ influence gave him an early exposure to literature and music. Though he studied physics for his undergraduate and postgraduate degrees, he chose to pursue management at IMT Ghaziabad, a decision that brought him closer to the advertising world. That blend of analytical training and creative instinct would later become a hallmark of his work.
His career began with Ogilvy & Mather, but it was at McCann that Joshi found the canvas on which to leave his deepest imprint. From memorable campaigns like Thanda matlab Coca-Cola to socially conscious messaging, his work has always carried a clarity of voice and a sharp understanding of what resonates with people. Over time, his leadership roles grew, first across South and Southeast Asia, and later across the Asia Pacific region. Today, he is not only a business leader but also a mentor to generations of advertising professionals.
Parallel to his advertising career, Joshi has built a reputation as a poet and lyricist. His lyrics for films like Rang De Basanti and Taare Zameen Par earned him national awards and a place in the cultural mainstream. His ability to shift between a film script, an advertising brief, and a poem shows the range of his creativity, and how he sees communication as a continuum rather than separate domains.
Recognition has followed. Joshi has been honoured with multiple National Film Awards, Filmfare Awards and the Padma Shri, among others. Beyond the accolades, however, is a consistent commitment to storytelling with substance. Whether writing for a brand or for the screen, his work often carries themes of identity, responsibility, and social awareness.
As a leader, Joshi is known for balancing creativity with discipline and artistry with strategy. His influence extends beyond campaigns and films to public service communication, from health initiatives to national messaging, where his words have reached millions. This ability to use communication for both business and social purposes has earned him respect across industries.
