What is the most unexpected aspect of comebacks? Seldom are they unintentional. In a industry that is fixated on the future, a notable number of Indian media executives are turning inward and circling back to the very organisations they once left. These are not tales of failure or fallback options. Rather, they are incisive, purposeful returns to one's beginnings, a movement that is completely upending the notion of career advancement.
Take Ajit Varghese, for instance. A media titan with thirty years of experience at JioStar, ShareChat, and GroupM, he recently rejoined Madison World as Group CEO and Partner. "Coming back to Madison feels like returning home — but with a fresh purpose and a bigger mission," he said. His re-entry is about recreating the future from familiar territory as much as it is about unresolved business.
Additionally, it reflects a larger trend that is evident in the media and marketing environment in India. In recent years, a steady stream of senior leaders have made their way back to previous roles. They see unrealised promise in themselves and the places they once helped create, not out of nostalgia.
Another example is Mona Jain’s return to Zee Media as the Chief Revenue Officer. Her comeback feels more like a recommitment than a rehire as she has spent decades in the trenches. Zee gained more than experience, as she has an understanding of how the company operates both internally and in the marketplace. They have a native speaker of their language.
Sunil Gadgil's return to Nivea India as Marketing Director following his tenure in senior positions at Beiersdorf throughout Europe. Along with his extensive knowledge of the Indian market, he returns with a global perspective honed by years of travel, which puts him in a position to combine his expertise with new strategic ideas.
Sanchari Chakrabarty’s return to 22feet Tribal WW (DDB Mudra Group) as Senior Vice President and Head of Strategy reflects this exact thinking. Prior to leading campaigns for Netflix, Meta, and Instagram at Leo Burnett and Tilt Brand Solutions, she worked for the firm for more than ten years. Her return is more calculated since Sanchari will have a team that understands her creative language and DDB will have a leader with experience. The focus now is not on where she’s been, but where they can go together.
Gaurang Menon returned as Chief Creative Officer at BC Web Wise is a similar situation. In addition to being a familiar face, his return signifies a new chapter for the agency after he gained a variety of expertise at big network agencies. His comeback reflects the deeper reason many leaders decide to return: the chance to build on a solid foundation while pursuing progress. It also gives consistency and fresh creative energy.
In an era where career mobility is increasingly lateral, businesses are beginning to value not just fresh talent but returning leaders with renewed perspective. Something unique is offered by these homecomings: contextual intelligence paired with new insight. Reestablishing a sense of purpose is generally the goal for returning leaders. For the companies, it’s about accelerating with individuals who already understands their DNA.
