  • Sunil Gautam, a pioneer in Indian advertising and public relations, has significantly influenced the industry for over 40 years, starting his career as a chartered accountant before co-founding CLEA Advertising & Marketing in 1985.
  • He established Clea Public Relations in 1995, which quickly became India's leading PR consultancy, emphasizing the importance of corporate credibility and stakeholder trust in communications.
  • In 1999, Gautam founded Hanmer & Partners, which grew into a major integrated communications firm and was later integrated with MSLGROUP under Publicis Groupe in 2007.
  • His entrepreneurial ventures include the India Art Summit and Pitchfork Partners Strategic Consulting LLP, the latter addressing the need for strategic communications and reputation advisory, and earning recognition as one of Asia-Pacific's fastest-growing consultancies.

There are industry leaders who build successful agencies, and then there are those who redefine an entire profession. Sunil Gautam belongs firmly to the latter category.

On his birthday, the communications industry celebrates a pioneer whose entrepreneurial instincts, strategic thinking and relentless ambition have shaped the evolution of Indian advertising, public relations and reputation management for over four decades.

Beginning his career as a chartered accountant in a multinational bank, Gautam could have remained in the comfort of finance. Instead, he chose uncertainty, stepping into an advertising industry that was still finding its feet in India. That decision would go on to influence generations of communicators.

In 1985, he co-founded CLEA Advertising & Marketing, which grew into India's seventh-largest advertising agency by the mid-1990s with more than 400 professionals across 20 offices. The agency became synonymous with financial communications and IPO marketing, setting benchmarks in a highly specialised segment.

Recognising the growing importance of reputation alongside advertising, Gautam established Clea Public Relations in 1995. Within just a few years, it emerged as India's leading PR consultancy, reflecting his belief that communications had to extend beyond campaigns to encompass corporate credibility and stakeholder trust.

Never one to settle, Gautam embarked on another entrepreneurial journey in 1999 by founding Hanmer & Partners. Starting from a modest 250-square-foot office with a handful of employees, Hanmer rapidly evolved into one of India's largest and most respected integrated communications firms.

Its growth attracted global attention, culminating in its integration with MSLGROUP under Publicis Groupe in 2007. Gautam successfully led the transition before moving into an emeritus role in 2011, leaving behind an organisation that had become a benchmark for integrated strategic communications in India.

His entrepreneurial journey, however, was far from over.

In 2008, he ventured beyond communications to establish India Art Summit, the country's first international art fair, demonstrating his belief in building institutions that create lasting cultural impact.

Then, in 2015, alongside Jaideep Shergill, Gautam co-founded Pitchfork Partners Strategic Consulting LLP, recognising a crucial gap in the communications industry: strategy. While agencies excelled at execution, businesses increasingly required strategic counsel rooted in reputation, business objectives and stakeholder understanding.

Pitchfork introduced a consultancy-first model focused on strategic communications and reputation advisory. What began with a small team has since grown into one of India's leading strategic consultancies, serving major corporations across India, the Middle East and Europe. The firm was also recognised among the fastest-growing consultancies across Asia-Pacific and EMEA.

Across every venture, Gautam has consistently anticipated where the communications industry was heading before the rest of the market caught up—from financial communications and integrated PR to strategic reputation consulting.

His contributions have earned widespread recognition. He was honoured as 'PR Professional of the Year' at the inaugural Exchange4media Corporate Communication & PR Awards and later received the prestigious IPRCCA Lifetime Achievement Award, recognising his enduring contribution to the profession.

Beyond building agencies, Gautam has remained one of the industry's most respected voices, with his perspectives sought by communication professionals worldwide. He has also served on numerous prestigious industry award juries, mentoring and recognising excellence across the profession.

Few leaders can claim to have built not one, but multiple industry-defining institutions. Fewer still can say they helped shape the trajectory of an entire profession.

As Sunil Gautam celebrates another year, his journey continues to serve as a reminder that the most enduring brands are not merely created through campaigns—they are built through vision, entrepreneurship and an unwavering belief in the power of strategic communication.

exchange4media wishes Sunil Gautam a very happy birthday and celebrates a remarkable legacy that continues to inspire India's communications fraternity.
