Senior journalist Santwana Bhattacharya has resigned as editor of The New Indian Express (TNIE), announcing her departure on X after what she described as nearly five years in the role.
Bhattacharya thanked readers who had followed her work and said she measured the newspaper’s influence by how often other newsrooms, from start-ups to established outlets, followed up on stories and ideas that originated at TNIE. She linked that reach to an editorial strategy that questioned which stories were treated as central to national coverage and which were left at the margins.
“It’s gratifying that good, old-fashioned journalism still works excellently if you produce clean, credible work. It turns out that all sides can trust it,” she wrote.
Bhattacharya also reflected on leading an editorial team of hundreds as a woman who had risen through beat reporting to the editorship of a legacy newspaper. She described the experience as a privilege and said she plans to take a break.
Bhattacharya was named editor in 2022 after serving as the group’s Karnataka resident editor. She had previously been TNIE’s political editor, and her reporting has spanned Parliament, elections and public policy.
