N. Murali named Chairman of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited

He succeeds Dr. Nirmala Lakshman, who stepped down as Chairperson upon nearing the completion of her three-year term

  • N. Murali has been appointed Chairman of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited (THGPPL) for a three-year term, succeeding Dr. Nirmala Lakshman.

N. Murali has been unanimously appointed Chairman of The Hindu Group Publishing Private Limited (THGPPL), succeeding Dr. Nirmala Lakshman, who stepped down upon nearing the completion of her three-year term. He will serve in the role for the next three years.

Murali brings more than 56 years of experience spanning management, business operations and finance. He joined The Hindu’s family-run enterprise in 1969 and has held a number of key leadership positions over the decades. He served as General Manager from 1977 and was appointed Joint Managing Director in 1995.

Murali became Managing Director of Kasturi & Sons Limited in 2006 and later served as Chairman of the company. In recent years, he has continued to contribute to the group as a Director of both THGPPL and Kasturi & Sons Limited.

Murali has also played a prominent role in several industry organisations. During his career, he has served as President of the Indian Newspaper Society, Chairman of the Audit Bureau of Circulations’ Council of Management, Chairman of the National Readership Studies Council, and Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Advertising Standards Council of India. He has additionally led the Press Institute of India-RIND as Chairman of its Board of Trustees.

His contributions have extended beyond India. He was the first representative from South Asia to be elected to the Board of IFRA, the international media publishing association based in Germany, and later served on the Board of the World Association of Newspapers in Paris. He is also a Trustee of the Media Development Foundation in Chennai, which administers the Asian College of Journalism.

Beyond the media sector, Murali currently serves as President of The Music Academy, Madras.
